Find Lost and Unclaimed Superannuation
The Australian Tax Office (ATO) provides a superannuation search tool to help you locate any lost or unclaimed superannuation. Typically, all you need is your Tax File Number (TFN) and, if you wish to transfer your unclaimed super to your preferred super fund, your super fund membership number as well.
What is Lost and Unclaimed Super?
If you’ve ever changed jobs or held a second job that paid superannuation, it’s possible you have some lost or unclaimed superannuation that you may not be aware of. In fact, billions of dollars in unclaimed and lost super are currently being held by super funds and the ATO.
Lost Super
Superannuation that is held by the fund into which it was paid, but remains idle because the fund is unable to contact the account holder. This often happens if the account holder changes jobs or moves and doesn't update their contact information. As a result, the super fund cannot send statements or other important information, and the account becomes "lost."
Unclaimed Super
Unclaimed superannuation refers to superannuation funds that have been transferred to the ATO from small and inactive accounts – those with balances less than $6,000 that have not received any contributions for 16 months. The ATO attempts to match these funds with a member’s active account, which is an account currently receiving contributions. If no active account can be found, the funds remain with the ATO until the rightful owner claims them.
Unclaimed Super and Insurance
Identifying unclaimed super may also help you discover insurance policies attached to your super accounts. Many super funds include insurance cover, such as life insurance, total and permanent disability (TPD) insurance, and income protection insurance. By locating your lost super, you can review any associated insurance policies and ensure you are adequately covered.
